Mauve is a pale purple color. More specifically, it is a pale shade of violet. The name "mauve" comes from the French word "mauve," which refers to the mallow flower.
Mauve is located between violet and pink in the color spectrum. It is often described as a muted or desaturated purple.
The color gained popularity in the mid-19th century after chemist William Henry Perkin accidentally created a synthetic dye while trying to synthesize quinine. This dye, initially called "aniline purple," became known as "mauve" and sparked the "mauve decade," a period where the color was fashionable in clothing and design. It became the first synthetic dye.
